The waitress didn't initially understand what I was talking about when I asked for some advice on what on the menu was either GF or could be modified. She disappeared for a while and returned to say she was going to speak to the chef. She dashed back to tell me not to eat the bread that had been brought to the table! There was a bit of a delay, but she did come back and check on a couple of things and advised that the dishes I was interested in (Mezze to start and Hammour for main) could be adapted for me.

The mezze (around 9 or 12 small dishes) came with a number of dishes repeated (one of my dining companions also ordered it, so I was able to compare what it would be like normally) but it was delicious. I would have preferred to have had some bread to go with it, but you get used to having to do without!

The hammour was described as coming with rice on the menu, but there was none on my plate; the waitress had checked that rice was ok for me to have in the mezze, so I was a little confused as to why it was missing on the main, but we had waited a while and I didn't want to delay longer.

Overall I was impressed that the waitress went to check with the chef to ensure she understood what was going to be ok and that they were able to adapt dishes. In future I would try to advise in advance that I needed GF, but it's not always easy to be understood over the phone!

While waiting for one of my fellow diners to arrive I asked the waiter if he could advise me what would be OK for me to eat. He didn't understand and sent someone else who also didn't understand who went to find someone else who finally seemed to get what I was asking.
We were interested in sharing some hot and cold mezze to start and then each ordering a main course. The guy who was going to help with the menu didn't seem to keen to go through the whole list with me, rather wanted me to choose things first and then he would tell me if they were ok; not really what I was looking for. He reluctantly started to go through the list with me. I wasn't sure that he understood what I was asking for and when he told me that the pasta salad was safe and that a salad with croutons would be OK if I picked the croutons off; I knew that he didn't understand.
In the end I chose mezze dishes that I thought were simply vegetables and for the main he said they would grill my fish and it would come only with vegetable for main.

Overall, I didn't feel very safe eating here and I also was not impressed with the service or willingness of the staff to help.

  3. Almost nobody in restaurants here knows the celiac desease and we experienced that even when they are a bit aware they tend to confuse gluten with starch and don't give rice!
Watch out for contaminations! if croutons were in the salad, you could not eat it.

We normally say that my daughter is allergic to wheat, we found this easier for them to understand.

Carluccio at the PEARL has a menu card gluten free.

At Marriot restaurants the executive chef, mr Reinhard (Austrian) is very well informed about food treatment and contamination but the chefs in the restaurant, that should be aware and were waiting for us (reservation with gluten free meals) seemed unprepared on the issue and they didn't offer any "starch" food to my daughter!!

    Cheers
